14th - 28th December 1918
In Westminster, the Conservatives won a majority of the seats. In Ireland, Sinn Féin won 73 of 105 Irish seats. The Irish Parliamentary Party was damaged by their wartime policy and won only six seats. Twenty-six Unionists were elected in Ireland; 23 in Ulster and three in Dublin.
With the Conservatives in power and Sinn Féin vowing not to take its seats in Westminster, the Unionists felt confident that they would be able to negotiate a more acceptable solution to Home Rule.
