New IRA Campaign begins

The Irish Republican Army (IRA) launched a campaign to destabilize Northern Ireland. The IRA kidnapped three Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) men in Co. Tyrone and held them hostage. In February they captured 40 prominent loyalists in Tyrone and Fermanagh. In March the IRA killed five Special police constables and one RIC man. They seized RIC barracks and burned flax mills in Co. Londonderry.
